From Jax and Milo to Out of the Bark

A green arrow with a curved tail and an upward-pointing arrowhead.

Out of the Bark was born out of Dan’s journey with his own dog, Jax. Struggling with Jax’s reactivity, Dan tried mainstream methods, even a shock collar, but quickly realized he couldn’t train through pain. That turning point led him to volunteer at the East Bay SPCA, where he discovered positive reinforcement and the power of building trust instead of fear. His passion for humane, science-based training grew into formal study with the Karen Pryor Academy, and in 2019 he founded Out of the Bark.

Megha’s path began in 2020 when she reached out to Dan for help with her German Shepherd puppy, Milo. Her persistence, dedication, and natural instincts to advocate for Milo transformed her from client to apprentice under Dan’s mentorship.

By 2022, they recognized how their complementary strengths, with Dan specializing in complex behavior cases and Megha excelling in puppy development and client support, could create something greater together. They joined forces to expand Out of the Bark into a partnership rooted in education, empathy, and a shared mission: helping dogs and their people thrive together.

Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC)
Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA-CTP)

Dan Clark is a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) through the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants and a Certified Training Partner with the Karen Pryor Academy. With over eight years of professional experience and more than a decade working hands-on with dogs, Dan has built a reputation as one of the Bay Area’s most trusted behavior specialists.

Dan’s journey began with his own dog, Jax, whose reactivity challenges inspired him to dive into the science of canine behavior. What started as a personal mission to help Jax thrive grew into a career dedicated to positive reinforcement and practical solutions for families struggling with fear, anxiety, and aggression in their dogs.

After starting his career as a full-time trainer with Petco, where he was quickly promoted to mentor and trainer of trainers, Dan founded Out of the Bark. Today, he works closely with veterinarians throughout the Bay Area to support clients with behavior modification, offering expertise for cases that often come after families have “tried everything else.” His clients appreciate his calm, professional guidance and his ability to help dogs and people live their best lives together.

Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPA-CTP)
Certified Puppy Start Right Instructor
Certified Control Unleashed Instructor

Megha’s journey into the world of animal behavior began with her own dog, Milo, whose reactivity introduced her to the challenges many families face. Supporting Milo through fear, anxiety, and reactivity required patience, compassion, and creative problem-solving. Together, they built a foundation of trust that not only transformed Milo’s life but also sparked Megha’s passion for helping other dogs and their people navigate similar struggles.

In 2020, Megha transitioned from working at Pet Food Express into a career in animal welfare and private training, where she discovered how rewarding it is to partner directly with families. Over the years, she has worked with dogs experiencing a wide range of behavioral challenges, including reactivity, fear, defensive aggression, and anxiety.

While she enjoys working with dogs of all ages, Megha has found a special passion for puppies and the opportunity to help owners build strong, lasting relationships with their dogs from the very beginning.

Megha earned her KPA Certified Training Partner (KPA-CTP) credential in 2022 and continues to grow her expertise through ongoing education and mentorship. She believes every dog-and-human team deserves patience, understanding, and tailored support on their training journey. Her goal is to enrich the human-animal bond while helping families create a more joyful and connected life with their dogs.
